Malfunctioning utility pole sparked blaze

A fire that burned seven acres of brush near the Hawaii Kai Golf Course on Monday was caused by sparks or embers from a malfunctioning electrical utility pole, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

Seelig said high winds caused the fire to spread near residences at Waikapu Loop and Mokuhano Street.

Firefighters contained the fire about an hour after it was reported at 2:28 p.m., with no damage to property, although several homes were evacuated temporarily.

1 man caught, 1 sought in Waikiki robbery

Honolulu police arrested a 23-year-old homeless man and are looking for a second suspect in a robbery in Waikiki.

Police said the suspect who is still at large assaulted a 36-year-old man at 3 a.m. Monday on a Waikiki side street. The 23-year-old man told the second suspect to take the man’s property, and both men fled, according to police.

Police arrested the homeless man on Waikolu Way near the King’s Village shopping center at 3:20 a.m. on suspicion of second-degree robbery. The victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

3 arrested after threats to teenage boy

Police arrested two men and a teenage boy in connection with alleged threats against a 16-year-old boy in Waimanalo on Monday afternoon.

Police said a 37-year-old man pointed a black handgun at the victim at 5:47 p.m. The victim notified police, but before officers arrived the suspect gave the handgun to a 16-year-old suspect, police said. The victim identified both suspects, who were arrested by police.

A 60-year-old Waimanalo man tried to intervene during the arrest, and he was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. for obstructing government operations, police said.
