A new Hawaii law prohibits businesses from discriminating against victims of domestic or sexual violence.

The Maui News reports in Tuesday’s editions that the law adds domestic or sexual violence victim status to the types of discrimination outlawed in employment decisions, including hiring and firing. The law applies if an employer knows someone is a victim of domestic violence.

It’s already illegal for employers to refuse to hire or fire someone based on race, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, disability, arrest or court record.

Sen. Roz Baker says this law prevents domestic violence victims from being re-victimized at work.

The law was created following the case of a Maui woman who was fired after her employer learned she had obtained a restraining order
