The Honolulu Fire Department is reminding the public that this is the last weekend to drop off illegal fireworks through its amnesty program.

Anyone can turn in fireworks without penalty under the program, which is supported by the Honolulu Police Department.

Fireworks will only be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the following four fire stations:

» Hawaii Kai Fire Station, 515 Lunalilo Home Road

» Kakaako Fire Station, 555 Queen St.

» Kalihi Kai Fire Station, 1334 Nimitz Highway

» McCully-Moiliili Fire Station, 2425 Date St.

Acceptable items include large fireworks, such as aerial shells, aerial tubes, Roman candles and skyrockets; and small fireworks, such as firecrackers, fountains, sprinklers, smoke balls, ground spinners, fireballs, toy trick noisemakers and smoke devices.

Some unacceptable items are homemade or modified fireworks, improvised explosives, guns and ammunition, and all flares.

The Fire Department reminded residents when handling fireworks to not smoke and to not leave fireworks in vehicle trunks. During transport, residents should place the fireworks in a cardboard box or a plastic bucket with a lid that is placed in the trunk. Drivers should go directly to the amnesty site and drop off the fireworks before going elsewhere.

About 2,205 pounds of fireworks was collected last weekend, bringing the total collected to 6,400 pounds since the program began in June, police said.
