Nene goose killed on road to Haleakala
Motorists visiting Haleakala National Park are reminded to drive slowly and carefully through the park after an adult nene goose, part of a breeding pair, was killed on the road in the park on Thursday.
Park rangers say nene, unlike other birds, do not flee when approached by cars. Some visitors feed the nene from their cars, creating a dangerous association between food and vehicles, the National Park Service says.
Signs are posted along the road to inform motorists of nene crossings and of areas where nene have been seen recently.
