Big Island firefighters put out Puna brush fire

Big Island firefighters extinguished a 70-acre brush fire that burned close to homes in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision Tuesday.

Firefighters stayed overnight to monitor the blaze after containing most of it Tuesday night, firefighters said. They put out some hotspots along the perimeter Wednesday.

The cause of the blaze, which started about 1:20 p.m. on the Hilo side of Kaloli Drive, was not determined. The fire burned mostly brush in an open lava field and came up to the property line of some houses in the subdivision, but firefighters were able to push the fire back.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury to his knee on Tuesday because of the rough terrain.
