California man dies after being swept to sea off Puna
A 22-year-old California man died Monday of injuries he suffered when a wave swept him into the ocean off Puna on Sunday.
The Hawaii County Police Department identified him as Paul Tam-Mai of Sunnyvale, Calif.
Police said Tam-Mai was climbing on a rocky cliff at the end of Paradise Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision about 3 p.m. Sunday when a wave knocked him into the ocean and carried him about 100 yards out to sea.
Fire rescue personnel found him face-down in the water, brought him to shore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Tam-Mai was taken in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center, then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. Monday.
