Kapolei knew what was coming, but perfection is pretty hard to prepare for.
The Pearl City girls basketball team was nearly flawless in a 52-30 blowout of Kapolei in a battle of unbeatens at Pearl City on Monday night.
The No. 10 Chargers hit the floor running, scoring the first 10 points of the game, running up a double-digit lead before the Hurricanes could even get two shots off. They had been looking forward to their first big test of the season, and aced it.
“They were definitely ready for Kapolei,” Pearl City coach Michael Morton said. “It is always a big game for our kids, Kapolei plays us so tough.”
Except on Monday night, when Pearl City pressed them from the start and never let them get going. Four of Pearl City’s five starters scored in the initial blitz, with Adrienne Jean Sylva leading the charge with six points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal in the first 6 minutes. She finished with 17 points, matching fellow guard Shawna Angle for the game high. Sylva had her team up eight at the end of the first quarter, and Angle doubled the margin in the second, outscoring the Hurricanes all by herself in the frame with 10 points to Kapolei’s four.
The Hurricanes cut the lead to 11 in the fourth quarter, but Sylva took over again, scoring nine points in the final 8 minutes to put it away. Despite looking forward to playing the Chargers in Pearl City, the Hurricanes were not ready. They were coming off a
13-day layoff, and playing one of the OIA Red West’s powers is no way to ease back into things.
“Take nothing away from Pearl City,” Kapolei coach Jesse Baugh said. “They came to play and did what they normally do, run those three guards inside and outside and in transition. The layoff kind of hurt us a little bit, but Pearl City played an outstanding game.”
Just as Kapolei knew what Pearl City was going to do, the opposite was true, as well.
The Hurricanes got 13 points from Toe Motu, but never got her going, switching between having her bring the ball up against the smaller Chargers or posting her up to receive the first pass each time down the floor. Pearl City held her to five points in the first half.
“The girls executed great tonight,” Morton said. “I think they will get a day off tomorrow.”
