With the weekend interviews completed, the next University of Hawaii football coach is expected to be named this week.
UH has been seeking a head coach since Dec. 5, when Greg McMackin signed a "release agreement" with the school, immediately "retiring" with 13 months remaining on a five-year contract.
From more than 40 applicants, the six-member search/advisory committee interviewed these candidates:
» Texas assistant head coach Duane Akina, a Punahou School graduate and former Washington quarterback who also has coached at UH and Arizona.
» Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker, who was an assistant coach at UH, Stanford and Southern California, and was defensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers.
» Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow, a Punahou graduate and former Utah offensive lineman who has run the offenses for Brigham Young, North Carolina State, USC, UCLA and the Tennessee Titans.
» Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who was head coach at Boise State and Arizona State.
» Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood, a Radford High graduate and former UH defensive back who also has coached at Navy, Richmond and Penn State.
Because of the Jaguars’ schedule, Koetter was interviewed via Skype on Saturday.
Chow arrived in Hawaii at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, met with the committee for about 90 minutes that night, and then departed for Salt Lake City on the first flight Sunday morning. He was in town less than 10 hours.
Banker and Norwood each had 90-minute interview sessions with the committee in the First Hawaiian Bank building on Sunday. Akina was interviewed on Saturday.
Despite lobbying from friends, no applicant from the current Warriors coaching staff had been invited to interview as of Sunday afternoon.
Of what appears to be the finalists, only Koetter has collegiate head-coaching experience.
Akina and Chow have coached for NCAA national championship teams.
Banker, Chow and Koetter have been National Football League coordinators.
Chow has coached Heisman Trophy winners Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.
According to ESPN.com, Norwood also is a candidate for the coaching vacancy at Penn State.
