Walk a mile in the name of peace

The Honpa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple is sponsoring a 1-mile peace walk July 16 at 6 p.m. to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the 1,600-mile pilgrimage of three Buddhist monks to protest nuclear destruction.

The walk honors the determination and courage of the monks, who began their journey on July 16, 2005, from San Francisco to Trinity, N.M., birthplace of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945, a news release said.

The walk will start with a lantern lighting ceremony at the temple’s headquarters at 1727 Pali Highway and end at the Nagasaki Peace Bell Memorial at the Honolulu Civic Center on South Beretania Street, across from the Board of Water Supply. Those who are unable to walk that far may attend a short service at the Nagasaki Peace Bell at 6:30 p.m. Suggested apparel is "something Buddhist" and comfortable shoes.

The movie, "GATE: The Atomic Flame," will precede the walk at 4 p.m. at the temple. Call 536-7044 for information.
