Trial date set for state hospital inmate accused of assault
A Big Island man, who was committed to the Hawaii State Hospital as a teen-ager by reason of insanity for raping and killing a six-year-old Puna girl, will go trial in September for assaulting a female hospital staff member last year.
State Circuit Judge Richard Perkins agreed this morning to a city prosecutor’s request to transfer Mark Davis Jr. to the Oahu Community Correctional Center from the Kaneohe State Hospital while awaiting trial.
Davis faces second-degree assault charges for allegedly hitting the female staff member with a padlock in 2009.
Prosecutors said Davis became upset while he was in the process of being placed in restraints, grabbed a combination padlock from a table and allegedly struck an occupational therapist in the head several times.
This morning Deputy Public Defender Ed Harada entered a not guilty plea for Davis, who did not speak during his brief arraignment.
His case goes before Judge Glenn Kim during the week of Sept. 6.
