3 to U.S. junior kayak team
Hawaii Canoe/Kayak Team members Kalei Kahookele, Alex Cheung and Trenton Tam were named to the six-man U.S. Junior Sprint World Championships team on Wednesday.
The trio was selected following team trials in Lake Placid, N.Y., which concluded Monday. They will return to Lake Placid on Tuesday for a two-week camp before heading to Brandenburg, Germany for the world championships, July 29-31.
Vega picked to all-tourney team
Gabriel Vega of Ku‘ikahi was named to the 17 Club all-tournament team Wednesday as the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championships concluded in Minneapolis.
Ku‘Ikahi lost in the quarterfinals of the gold bracket to share fifth place overall.
Pai‘ea tied for 27th and Ku‘ikahi Black finished tied for 41st out of 51 teams in the 17 Club division.
East Oahu earns softball title
The East Oahu Strikers won the 14-and-under B Division of the ASA State Girls Softball Tournament, capping an undefeated performance with a 4-3 victory over RBI at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Members of the team are Ashlyn Okamoto, Brooke Maeda, Cassie Ho, Kai Hasegawa, Chelsea Soong, Noelle Mercado, Taylor Maihui, Michelle Mestanza, Shaye Simms, Courtney Kiehm, Taylor Tani, Kama Sordillia, Ulu Sordillia and Tori Maeda. The coaches are Peter Ho, Sean Okamoto, Rick Kiehm, Todd Sordillia, Randy Rosales, Sean Mercado and Dennis Hathaway.
The team qualified for the national tournament, but declined the bid due to finances.
