Pedestrian fatality was a Palolo man

The city Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the pedestrian killed Tuesday night when he was hit by a van in Palolo as Dickey Lau, 87, of Palolo.

Police said Lau was struck by a 2002 Nissan van driven by a 78-year-old man as Lau was crossing 10th Avenue near Kaau Street about 8 p.m.

It was not clear whether Lau was in the crosswalk, police said. Lau suffered critical head and internal injuries and died at the Queen’s Medical Center, police said.

The death is the 28th traffic fatality this year, compared with 30 at the same time last year. It was also the third traffic fatality on Oahu since Sunday.

Motorcyclist killed in crash ID’d

A motorcyclist killed in a crash early Sunday morning has been identified by the city Medical Examiner’s Office as Tyron Antonio-Schmidt, 21, of Kapolei.

Medical examiners said Antonio-Schmidt died from injuries suffered during the crash, which has been ruled an accident. Pollice said the crash happened at 12:55 a.m. on Malakole Street in Campbell Industrial Park when the victim, driving a 2006 Yamaha, lost control and laid the motorcycle down, sliding into concrete barriers. Antonio-Schmidt was thrown from the motorcycle, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charge filed in pellet-gun firing

Hawaii County police have charged a 25-year-old Kailua-Kona man arrested Sunday in connection with a pellet-gun shooting Friday in the parking lot of a local business on Kuakini Highway.

Andrew M. Wanat was charged Monday evening with first-degree attempted robbery and second-degree assault. His bail was set at $12,000.

Police said Wanat stole the wallet of a 54-year-old Kailua-Kona man and shot the man in the shoulder with a gas-powered pellet gun when the victim chased him.
