2 earn all-tourney in boys volleyball
Outrigger Canoe Club’s Micah Christenson was named to the all-tournament team in the 18 Open Division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championships in Minneapolis.
Both Outrigger (6-3) and Ku‘ikahi (9-1) lost in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket to share fifth.
In 18 Club, Ku‘ikahi Red’s Chad Barretta was named to the all-tournament team. Ku‘ikahi White finished 6-6.
In 14 Open, Ku‘ikahi lost in the semifinals of the silver bracket to finish 11th overall.
In 14 Club, Pai‘ea lost in the quarterfinals of the silver bracket to place 13th overall. In the same division, Ku‘ikahi won Flight 1, finishing 25th overall.
Croson MVP at nationals
Incoming University of Hawaii freshman Jane Croson earned MVP honors in leading Sports Shack to the championship of the 18 Open Division Sunday at the USA Volleyball Girls National Championships in Atlanta.
Imi Ike, with incoming UH freshman Kalei Adolpho, lost its first match of the tourney in the 18 National semifinals and shared third. Adolpho was named to the all-tournament team.
Stanley helps U.S. advance
The U.S. men’s national volleyball team advanced to the FIVB World League final round with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-19 sweep of Puerto Rico on Saturday in Long Beach, Calif.
Former University of Hawaii opposite Clay Stanley finished with 12 points (six kills, four blocks, two aces). He helped the U.S. get off to a quick start in Set 1 with two aces that carried the team to a 6-1 lead.
"Clay has the ability to affect any set when he goes back to serve," U.S. head coach Alan Knipe said.The final round begins in Gdansk, Poland, on Wednesday.
