Johnson, Perry win swim opener

Kacy Johnson and Kate Perry won their respective divisions Saturday as the 23rd Surf ‘N’ Sea North Shore Swim Series kicked off with the Aloha Salads Sprint.

Johnson bested the field of 808, finishing the 1-mile course from Sunset Beach to Pipeline in 22 minutes and 26 seconds. Defending series champion Steve Allnutt was 13 seconds behind (22:39.1), narrowly edging out Ian Dunham-Wheeler (22:39.4).

Perry outsprinted Nicole Hagi on the beach to win the women’s division in 24:57. Hagi was second (25:00) and defending series champion Kathryn Taylor third (25:36).

Wahine volleyball tickets on sale

Season tickets for the Hawaii women’s volleyball team will go on sale Tuesday.

The Rainbow Wahine have 20 home matches, including their final Western Athletic Conference schedule. Hawaii, 13th in the final national rankings last season, opens the year with the Chevron Invitational, Aug. 26-28, with San Francisco, Arizona and Wichita State.

Ticket packages run from $75 (students high school and younger) to $120 (upper level adult). Lower level tickets are $165, plus a premium seat contribution to ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue.

2 golds for Team Piko Ho‘omau

Team Piko Ho‘omau won the 14-under club division at the USA Volleyball Girls National Championships in Atlanta.

The team went 9-2, defeating Coast Volleyball Club of California 25-12, 21-25, 15-8 for the gold in the 48-team division.

It was the second gold medal for the team in as many weeks. It also won its division at the AAU national championship in Orlando, Fla.

Team members are Kamalani Akeo, Reyn Akiu, Cassidy Apo, Tepoe DeMello, McKenna Granato, Mariko Lau, Nikki Ki, Kennedy Poligratis, Payton Spragling and Marissa Nakasone. The head coach is Lehua Kadooka, with assistants Revere Akiu, Jaime Apo and Kilo Akiu.

Also in the 14-U division, Jammers finished tied for 13th.

Other results from Atlanta were:

» ASICS Mavs finished second in the 12-under National club division, their only loss coming in the gold final against Puerto Rico’s Borinquen Coqui 25-20, 16-25, 20-18. Team members are Lacey Angello, Jaiden Chase, Eleanor Debacker, Katlyn Giefer, Whitney Hinmon, Makenzie Lake, Jacqueline Smith, Lauren Stubbs and Peyton Uhlenhake. The coaches are Abbie Jacobson and Annette Mellard.

Jammers finished tied for 19th and Imua 37th.

» In the 13U American club division, Asics Rainbows finished ninth, winning the silver bracket.

» Ka Ulukoa finished 13th in 13U Open.

» In the 15U National club division, Jammers placed ninth, winning the silver bracket.

» Ka Ulukoa tied for seventh in the 15 Open.

Outrigger takes silver medal

Outrigger Canoe Club Red won the silver medal in the 12-under division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championships in Minneapolis.

Outrigger (5-6) lost to Puerto Rico’s Vaqueros 25-14, 25-20 in the gold-medal match at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Red team members are Jameson McKibbin, Jacob Chouljian, Shea Suzumoto, Ryan Wilcox, Buddy Scott, Kana‘i Akana, Parker Van Dyke. The coaches are Diana McKibbin and Tony McInerny.

Outrigger White finished 2-7 and Ku‘ikahi 0-11.

Also in the 13U club division, Ku‘ikahi took bronze.
