Three members of Hawaii’s 2011 football recruiting class will not be playing for the Warriors this season.

Safety Marcus Umu, a 2010 Saint Louis School graduate who joined the Warriors in January, is no longer on the UH roster, head coach Greg McMackin confirmed.

Umu will focus on academics.

Kakuhu High’s Tigi Hill and Ben Mamea signed letters of intent with the Warriors in February. But neither met the full NCAA requirements to play for the Warriors this season.

Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said Hill will attend Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.

Torres said Mamea is deciding between attending a junior college on the mainland or a four-year college in Hawaii that does not field a football team.

If he chooses the latter option, he can enroll at UH after accumulating 24 transferrable credits. After that, he would have four years to play four seasons for the Warriors. Mamea is a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker.

Meanwhile, Ellis Henderson, a 2011 graduate of Washington’s Skyview High, said he is recovering from a procedure to repair a chipped bone in his right shoulder.

"I’m going to be a part-time student (at UH) in the fall semester," Henderson said. "I’m going to pay my way for that. The scholarship starts in January."

He played receiver and defensive back in high school, but was told he will compete at slotback for the Warriors.

UH-Washington on TV

The University of Hawaii’s first road game this season, Sept. 10 against Washington in Seattle, will be picked up by the Root Sports network, UW announced on Friday. Kickoff is at 9:30 a.m.

Root, which was formerly known as Fox Sports Network Northwest, is owned by DirecTV, and has a potential audience of 3.7 million households in five northwest states. It also airs Seattle Mariners baseball, Washington State and Oregon State events.

It was not immediately known if the game will be available on either of the planned pay-per-view offerings in Hawaii.
