Kono eliminated at Publinx

Punahou graduate Stephanie Kono’s run at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship ended with a loss in the quarterfinals on Friday in Bandon, Ore.

Brianna Do, Kono’s teammate at UCLA, won the match 2 up and went on to advance to the final. Do took the lead with a birdie on the 14th hole, matched pars with Kono over the next three holes and closed the match with another birdie on No. 18.

Do then defeated Annie Park 2 and 1 in the semifinals and will face Marissa Dodd in today’s championship match at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Park had knocked off top-seeded Cheyenne Woods, Tiger Woods’ niece, in the quarterfinals 3 and 2.

Owens injured in Argonauts’ victory

Chad Owens’ Canadian Football League season debut ended a lot earlier than expected.

The former University of Hawaii standout had three catches for 39 yards and two punt returns for 25 yards before an injury midway through the second quarter forced him out of Toronto’s opener against Calgary on Friday night.

Owens was returning his second punt when a defender delivered a shot to the back of his head that kept him on the ground for a few minutes.

Eventually, Owens was helped up by trainers and walked slowly toward the Argonauts’ bench.

Later in the quarter, he was shown getting treatment on his right shoulder. He did not return to the game. Toronto prevailed over Calgary 23-21.
