Honolulu officials are trying to control a wild pig problem at a Windward Oahu botanical park.
City Parks Director Gary Cabato said 225 pigs have been caught in the past two years with box traps at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe.
The city has renewed an animal control contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, according to KITV.
Cabato said trapping is needed to protect the public, parks staff and plants. He said hunting wouldn’t be prudent because of camping at the park on weekends.
The box traps are set in areas away from where the public visits.
Other Oahu botanical gardens are experiencing wild animal problems. The Koko Head park has a peacock problem, and there are feral chickens at Wahiawa Botanical Garden.
