Woman struck by trolley identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified a 76-year-old woman who died after being hit by a trolley in Waikiki as Setsuko Furuya of Honolulu.

Police said Furuya was crossing Royal Hawaiian Avenue near Lauula Street in a marked crosswalk Monday night when she was hit by the trolley, driven by a 52-year-old man.

Paramedics took Furuya to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition after the 7:35 p.m. accident.

Police said she died at the hospital.

High-speed chase ends with crash

Three people were taken to the hospital Tuesday after a brief high-speed chase by a deputy sheriff’s car that ended in a crash near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

A Sheriffs Division supervisor said a deputy sheriff tried to stop a car near Lagoon Drive by Honolulu Airport at about 6 p.m.

The car refused to stop and fled on the H-1 freeway to the Hickam offramp at about 65 mph, the supervisor said. The car hit the deputy’s car where the road splits into the entrance for Hickam and Pearl Harbor at O’Malley Boulevard, apparently jumped a metal barrier and ended up on its side against a utility pole across the street.

The deputy’s vehicle came to rest against a concrete barrier. The supervisor said the deputy’s airbag deployed. Sheriffs said the male deputy was treated at a hospital and released.

A man and a woman were the only occupants of the car. The man, in his 20s, was taken to the hospital in serious condition, a paramedics spokeswoman said. Federal firefighters took the woman, who appeared to be in her early 20s, to the hospital in unknown condition.
