Orchidland house badly damaged in blaze
Fire caused about $135,000 damage to a house in Keaau Wednesday morning, Hawaii County firefighters said.
A two-room extension of the house and a bedroom sustained heavy fire damage, the fire department said. The rest of the house sustained major smoke and heat damage.
The fire was reported at 7:49 a.m. and the first unit responded at 7:55 a.m. to 16-1718 34th Ave. in the Orchidland subdivision.
When firefighters arrived at 7:59 a.m., smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the house. Firefighters searched for victims until the homeowner arrived and told them no one was home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
3 men aid woman who was being attacked
A 33-year-old man who tried to sexually assault a woman was foiled by three Punahou-area apartment residents who heard her screams for help early Wednesday morning.
Police said the suspect followed the woman from South Beretania to the Punahou-Dole street intersection about 1:30 a.m. When the man dragged the woman into the grass in front of 1508 Punahou St. and pinned her, the woman struggled to get away and began screaming for help.
Three men from an apartment across Punahou Street came to her aid and held the suspect until police arrived. The man, who has no permanent address, was arrested and was being held for investigation of kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault.
Suspect in beating death was on probation

According to court records, Waylen Keone Carenio was on probation for domestic abuse at the time of Saturday’s incident. Carenio is being held on $50,000 bail.
Hawaii County Police Lt. Greg Esteban told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald that an autopsy on 44-year-old Roy Joseph Williams Jr. shows he died of blunt force trauma to the head.
Witnesses say the men were involved in a fight and that Williams fell and hit his head on the pavement. Summer Mochida, owner of the bar, Karma Hawaii, said the fight didn’t take place on the bar’s property.
