Police closed King Street after ‘acidic fluid’ thrown at homeless
Police are investigating a report that someone may have thrown a bottle containing a small amount of "acidic fluid" at homeless campers in front of Old Stadium Park in McCully early this morning.
Police said a 52-year-old homeless man said he heard a noise just after 3 this morning, and when he went out of his tent at 2255 S. King St., he saw a car speeding away and a bottle "with fluid and a smell" on the ground. Police arrived at the scene at 3:33 a.m.
Police immediately evacuated the area and closed King Street between Poha Lane and Isenberg Street at about 4 a.m..
The Fire Department’s hazardous materials unit was called at 3:58 a.m. to assess and neutralize the liquid.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said there was an uncapped bottle and about a a pint of fluid on King Street.

Soda ash was added to the fluid on the road to neutralize it, Seelig said, and the fluid was transferred to a half-gallon bucket.
City road crews disposed of the liquid after it was neurtalized by the hazardous materials crew, a city Road Division official said.
No one was injured, and the road reopened a few hours later.
Police initiated a reckless endangering and manufacture of a prohibitive device investigation.
