An autopsy was scheduled today on Kauai for a victim and her alleged knife-wielding assailant who was fatally shot by police and stabbed several other people in Waimea.
At about 11 a.m. Friday, 21-year-old Shendon Chandler-Taniguchi attacked his 83-year-old grandfather, Anthony Chandler, then attacked a neighbor, 68-year-old Edita Padamada, who died from her wounds, police said.
Chandler-Taniguchi walked a short distance and also allegedly attacked other neighbors outside their home — James Rick, 63, and Julie Bergseid, 50.
Police said an officer tried to stop Chandler-Taniguchi, but he ignored the officer’s verbal commands, continued the attack and then turned on the officer.
The officer shot the suspect, who attempted to flee and then collapsed and died at the scene, police said.
Anthony Chandler remained in stable condition Monday at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Residents said they were shocked and saddened by the attacks and deaths.
Kauai resident Michael Libertore described Anthony Chandler as a great neighbor who took care of a nearby church grounds.
"He’s the nicest man in the world," Libertore said.
Kauai County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said Monday that police will not release additional details about Chandler-Taniguchi while the investigation remains active.
