1. Youthful connection
» Situation: Brigham Young 7, Hawaii 6, 3:41 remaining second quarter, Hawaii ball first and 10 at Hawaii 21
» The Play: WR Trevor Davis catches a screen pass from QB David Graves and follows blocks from LT Brett Leonard, LG Andrew Faamu and C London Sapolu. Davis breaks away for a 79-yard touchdown.
» Impact: Hawaii’s longest play of the year from scrimmage gives UH its final lead of the season. Since Graves is a sophomore and Davis a freshman, it also gives Hawaii hope for the future.
» Sapolu: "It was wide open. Brett did a good job cutting his guy, Faamu did a good job taking his gap. You can’t draw it up any better."
2. Senior sack
» Situation: Hawaii 13, Brigham Young 7, 1:12 remaining second quarter, Brigham Young ball first and 10 at Hawaii 38
» The Play: DE Liko Satele drops QB Riley Nelson for a 6-yard loss.
» Impact: Hawaii’s defense played well to this point, and Satele gets two sacks among his four tackles in the final game of his college career. But Brigham Young doesn’t stay down long and on the next play, Nelson passes 22 yards to WR Ross Apo for a first down. With time running down in the first half, Justin Sorensen kicks a field goal to narrow Hawaii’s halftime lead to 13-10.
» Satele: "That’s what we’ve been doing this whole year, is trying to bounce back. That pretty much sums up the season."
3. Full Nelson
» Situation: Hawaii 13, Brigham Young 10, 11:57 remaining third quarter, Brigham Young ball third and 8 at Hawaii 33
» The Play: Nelson appears on the verge of being sacked by LB Art Laurel, but gets rid of the ball before going down. It is caught 21 yards downfield by WR Cody Hoffman for a first down.
» Impact: Two plays later Nelson passes to Apo at around the 5, and Apo runs through two defenders for Brigham Young’s go-ahead touchdown.
» Nelson: "We’ve got big receivers — 6-3, 6-4, 6-5. We’re just giving them an opportunity to go up and get it."
4. Mighty Sampson
» Situation: Brigham Young 17, Hawaii 13, 9:36 remaining third quarter, Hawaii ball first and 10 at Hawaii 26
» The Play: RB Joe Iosefa fumbles and the ball is picked up by S Joe Sampson. Sampson runs 26 yards for a BYU touchdown.
» Impact: Hawaii never recovers from BYU’s second touchdown in less than a 3-minute span.
» Graves: "Before we knew it, we were down by 11. It was an unfortunate turn of events."
5. Look, Ma, one hand
» Situation: Brigham Young 31, Hawaii 13, 1:10 remaining third quarter, Brigham Young ball second and 10 at Hawaii 38
» The Play: Nelson looks again like he is doomed to be sacked, but again he gets off a pass. Hoffman makes a one-handed catch on this one and runs untouched into the Hawaii end zone.
» Impact: Even though there is more than an entire quarter left in the game, this play serves as the dagger. Brigham Young outscores Hawaii 28-0 in the third quarter.
» BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall: "One of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen."
