The farthest road trip in program history proved worthwhile for Dana Takahara-Dias and the Hawaii women’s basketball team.
The Rainbow Wahine earned their first win over a Division I opponent this season with a 66-55 defeat of Columbia on Saturday in New York, two days after falling just short against Army at West Point.
"It’s been a successful trip. … We’re very grateful and thankful to get a win against Columbia," Takahara-Dias said. "I thought the experience of going to the Big Apple was irreplaceable and valuable for us to build chemistry. It was an overall great trip for our Wahine basketball team."
UH (2-7) stopped a seven-game losing streak and earned a split on the trip despite committing 22 turnovers at Levien Gymnasium.
Sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson led the Rainbow Wahine with her third double-double of the season — 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore wing Shawna Kuehu added 13 points, four assists and four steals.
Senior guard/forward Courtney Gaddis came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points with six rebounds. She hit both of her 3-point attempts and all six of her free throws.
"I think Courtney was our sparkplug, especially when Breanna Arbuckle got into a little foul trouble," Takahara-Dias said. "She came off the bench and was instrumental."
The Wahine shot 46.3 percent from the field, yielding a season high in points, compared to 31.6 percent for Columbia.
After leading 33-28 at halftime, UH went on a 15-3 run to open the second period and take a 48-31 lead. The closest the Lions would get in the second half was six points.
"I thought we started the second half strong, and (not doing) that had been one of the nemeses of our team," Takahara-Dias said. "We picked up fullcourt … and put the defensive pressure on a little greater. That proved beneficial for us."
Taylor Ward led the Lions (1-7) of the Ivy League with 20 points.
