A Kauai police officer fatally shot a 21-year-old man after the man attacked four people with a large knife, including a woman who died from stab wounds.
At about 11 a.m. Friday, police said, the suspect, of Waimea, attacked his 83-year-old grandfather on Menehune Road. The suspect then stabbed a 68-year-old female neighbor who died from her wounds.
Police said the suspect then walked a short distance and attacked a couple, a 63-year-old man and 50-year-old woman, outside their home.
A responding police officer attempted to stop the suspect, who ignored the officer’s commands and continued with the attack when the officer shot him, police said. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the suspect and the 68-year-old woman have yet to be released.
The three wounded victims, whose injuries were described as not life-threatening, were transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Police closed off Menehune Road at the intersection of Maile Road following the shooting.
The police officer will be placed on administrative leave assigned to desk duty, a standard procedure, during the course of the investigation, said Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry.
The shooting and stabbings occurred about two blocks from Ishihara Market, where two employees are related to the victims and the assailant, said supervisor Ederline Parubrub.
"It’s really a tragedy. It’s really sad," Parubrub said. "We’re all shocked."
She said the assailant’s grandfather is Anthony Chandler, whose son, Alton Chandler, works for the market.
The woman who was stabbed to death is the mother of Ishihara employee Freddy Padamada, Parubrub said.
