Hawaii liberos make mark
Of the five liberos chosen for the USA Girls Youth A2 High Performance volleyball team, four are from Hawaii. They are among the more than 20 Hawaii athletes in the USVBA’s Aloha Region that have been chosen, after tryouts, to train with national teams this summer.
Shawna-Lei Santos (Sacred Hearts), Chelsey Keoho (Kamehameha) and Katherine Brooks and Karly Kan (Punahou) will all train with the Girls Youth A2 team in Tucson, Ariz., next month. Hawaii has six at the USA Boys’ Future Select A1 Camp.
Others who will train and play this summer with national programs are:
Boys—Kawika Shoji (U.S. Men’s A2 National Team); Micah Christenson, Joshua Taylor, Taylor Crabb (U.S. Junior National Training Team); Sean Gruebner (USA Youth A2 Team); Evan Enriques, Kupono Fey, Kaehu Kaaa (USA Select A1 Camp); Cullen Mosher (USA Select A2 Camp); Eleu Akimseu, Bryson Chan, Kainoa Quindica, Wil Stanley, Benjamin Swanson, Kelsey Yogi (USA Future Select A1 Camp).
Girls—Tamari Miyashiro (U.S. Women’s National Team); Ariel Miyasaki (USA Select A1); Karley Demello (USA Select A2 Team); Bailey Choy (USA Future Select A1); Alexandria Cosier-Tomiyama, Elena Oglivie, Ana Oglivie (USA Future Select A2 Camp).
Baseball camps set for next month
Registration is under way for the 2011 Hawaii baseball summer camps, July 16-24.
Two-day camps focusing on pitching, catching, hitting, and infield defense are available for $100, and a special all-day camp July 18-21 from 9 to 4 p.m. is available for $375.
The camps are run by Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso and his staff. Trapasso led the Rainbows to a Western Athletic Conference tournament title in 2010 and a share of the regular-season WAC championship this year.

Low’s basketball clinic in July
The Derrick Low-Hawaii Raiders basketball clinic will be held July 9-10 at Kalani High School.
The cost is $80, with two-day sessions for beginner or advanced players ages 6-17.
Former ‘Iolani and Washington State star Derrick Low will run the clinic, along with former ‘Iolani standouts Kyle Pape and Kainoa Chu.
