» 1869: Samuel Thomas Alexander and Henry Perrine Baldwin, sons of missionaries working on a Maui sugar plantation, buy 12 acres in Makawao for $110 to grow sugarcane.
» 1870: Partners buy an additional 559 acres, and plant their first crop to mark the start to what would become Alexander & Baldwin Inc.
» 1876: Baldwin begins work on the Hamakua Ditch to carry irrigation water from the slopes of Haleakala to Central Maui for several plantations, establishing the first subsidiary of the Alexander and Baldwin partnership.
» 1882: Capt. William Matson sails from San Francisco to Hilo carrying 300 tons of food, plantation supplies and general merchandise.
» 1898: Alexander and Baldwin acquires control of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.
» 1899: Alexander & Baldwin acquires Kahului Railroad Co.
» 1900: Alexander & Baldwin Ltd. is incorporated, replacing a series of partnerships that included Paia Plantation, Haleakala Sugar Co. and Alexander & Baldwin Plantation.
» 1901: Capt. Matson incorporates his shipping business as Matson Navigation Co. in California.
» 1904: Alexander is killed by a falling boulder while hiking in Africa.
» 1908: A&B invests $200,000 for minority ownership in Matson.
» 1910: Matson introduces passenger service.
» 1911: Baldwin dies at age 68 from failing health.
» 1913: A&B stock is publicly listed on the Honolulu Stock and Bond Exchange.
» 1917: Capt. Matson dies at age 67 after expanding his fleet to 14 ships in the Pacific passenger-freight service.
» 1926: Matson acquires the Moana Hotel in Waikiki, and a year later builds the Royal Hawaiian Hotel to serve tourists arriving on Matson ships.
» 1930: A&B acquires Kauai Fruit & Land Co., which is renamed Kauai Pineapple Co.
» 1949: A&B forms Kahului Development Co. with plans to build a "Dream City" called Kahului. A year later the first home is sold.
» 1957: Matson buys 1,500 acres of Wailea land to expand hotel operations.
» 1959: Matson sells its four hotels, including the Surfrider and Princess Kaiulani.
» 1962: Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar becomes a division of A&B via merger.
» 1964: A&B acquires controlling interest in Matson. Kauai Pineapple closes.
» 1967: A&B sells an insurance division.
» 1968: A&B subsidiary Kahului Railroad Co. becomes Kahului Trucking & Storage Inc. after railroad shuts down.
» 1969: Matson becomes wholly owned subsidiary of A&B.
» 1970: Matson sells its passenger vessels to focus on West Coast-Hawaii freight service.
» 1971: A&B partners with Northwest Mutual Life Insurance Co. to develop Wailea Resort on Matson land.
» 1974: A&B acquires 20 percent stake in Pacific Resources Inc., or PRI.
» 1985: A&B begins planning 1,000-acre residential community Kukui’ula on Kauai.
» 1987: Matson starts a business arranging mainland rail and truck transportation now known as Matson Logistics. A&B’s McBryde Sugar Co. plants coffee on Kauai.
» 1989: A&B sells Wailea Resort and PRI for more than $300 million, followed a year later by land for a planned community called Maui Lani. Proceeds are largely used to acquire commercial real estate on the mainland.
» 1993: A&B acquires full ownership of former cooperative sugar refinery California & Hawaiian Sugar Co.
» 1996: A&B closes McBryde Sugar.
» 1998: A&B sells majority stake in C&H, followed by remainder in 2005.
» 2002: A&B relaunches development for Kukui’ula.
» 2003: A&B repurchases 270 acres of undeveloped land at Wailea Resort.
