The public is advised to stay out of Kaneohe Bay and Windward Oahu and North Shore waters because of sewage spills and storm runoff from Saturday’s heavy rains.

The state Health Department issued a brown water advisory for waters from Waikane to Haleiwa Beach Park because of possible overflowing cesspools, sewer, manhole, pesticide, animal fecal matter, dead animals, flood debris and other chemicals and bacteria that may have been washed into the ocean by the heavy rains.

The state says if the water is turbid and brown, swimmers should stay out.

The Health Department says there were at least two wastewater spills in Kaneohe and are advising people to stay out of Kaneohe Bay. Two manholes at the Kaneohe Wastewater Treatment Facility overflowed at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday spilling about 30,000 gallons of wastewater into Kawa Stream, which empties into Kaneohe Bay. Warning signs are also being posted along the stream below the Bayview Golf Course. The state Clean Water Branch was also notified about a 1,400 gallon discharge on MikiolaDrive at 9:50 p.m. that also entered the bay.
