The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life

Bend, Ore., was chilly over the Memorial Day holiday. On May 30 the high was 57 degrees, but that lasted for only a couple of hours in the afternoon. So Hawaii Kai residents Bob Stromberg and Suzie Anderson were surprised to find, in their words, "a little warm reminder of Hawaii" at the new Big Island Kona Mix Plate restaurant in the Old Mill District of Bend. They discovered that the owner was born and grew up in Kona and that the storefront sign came from the original restaurant there.
