Stanley helps U.S. beat Japan
Hawaii’s Clay Stanley scored 14 points to help the U.S. men’s national volleyball team even its FIVB World Cup record at 4-4 on Tuesday.
Stanley had eight kills and a match-high six blocks in the Americans’ 39-37, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of Japan, in Fukuoka.
The U.S., ranked fourth in the world, remains in seventh place in the World Cup standings, just behind Iran. Japan, ranked 18th, fell to 2-6 and is ninth. The U.S. travels to Tokyo for its final three matches this weekend.
The three top teams Sunday earn berths into the 2012 Olympic Games.
Vercruyssen, teammates place fourth
Hawaii’s Nani Vercruyssen and her U.S. teammates placed fourth in the Trampoline-Tumbling World Championships team competition last week in England.
Vercruyssen also placed 12th in synchronized trampoline with Savannah Vinsant and 35th overall in the individual trampoline standings.
BYU routs BYUH in women’s basketball
Kim Parker scored 17 points to lead Brigham Young to an 88-27 women’s basketball victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in the Hukilau Invitational opener in Laie on Monday night.
It was the worse loss in BYUH women’s hoops history, according to sports information director Scott Lowe.
Kristen Riley added 12 points for the Cougars (5-2).
Shayla Washington scored 10 points to lead the Seasiders (0-3).
PacWest to add track and field
The Pacific West Conference will expand the number of sports it offers to 15 beginning in 2012-13 with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field.
The conference’s school presidents approved the additions on Tuesday during a conference call.
The school presidents of the PacWest previously approved the addition of women’s golf and men’s tennis for the 2012-13 campaign.
The league currently sponsors 11 sports — men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball in the fall; men’s and women’s basketball in the winter; and baseball, men’s golf, softball and women’s tennis in the spring.
