It’s becoming as traditional as eating turkey on Thanksgiving Day.
Kody Mento rushed for three touchdowns as ‘Iolani wrapped up its fifth consecutive state title with a 34-0 win over Waipahu on Friday night in the Division II finale of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships at Aloha Stadium.
The Raiders (8-4) have won six of the past seven Division II titles and 10 games in a row overall in the state tournament since a 38-37 loss to King Kekaulike in 2006.

Key: The Raiders rushed for 283 yards and took advantage of five Waipahu turnovers. |
"Every year we are faced with different challenges," said quarterback Reece Foy, who was 12-for-21 for 158 yards and a touchdown. "It took us a while to put it together, but we were fortunate enough to do it tonight and come out with a victory."
Senior Jordan Lee kicked two field goals and ran for 177 of ‘Iolani’s 283 rushing yards, outgunning Waipahu on the ground.
"We have a plan of how we want to attack, but we still are going to take what the defense gives us," ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "You have to give credit to our offensive line. To run the ball against a defense that is aggressive and physical is a big accomplishment for our program."
The Raiders didn’t play for 22 days before last week’s semifinal, a narrow 17-13 victory over Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion Kapaa. Against the Marauders, the Raiders scored less than 5 minutes in and were never threatened.
"Kapaa was a tough team and that’s what we needed," Look said. "The rust, if you want to call it that, showed and Kapaa made us work for it, (which) really jumpstarted us into this game."
Waipahu (9-4), which won the Oahu Interscholastic Association White playoffs and held on to beat Lahainaluna last week, struggled to overcome the loss of senior quarterback Drake Yoshioka, who broke his collarbone late in the fourth quarter against the Lunas.
Junior Mataio Fualema got the start with a week’s work of preparation, but completed just one of 11 passes with two interceptions.
"Losing Drake was definitely a negative for us this week," Waipahu coach Eric Keola said. "We had to quickly put in a package and see what Fualema could do with a week’s preparation.
"We tried to establish the run game, which at times we were able to do, but then had a couple of breakdowns."
The Marauders committed five turnovers, but none was bigger than a fumbled punt in the first quarter after holding ‘Iolani to a three and out on its first drive.
Trey Muraoka recovered the loose ball on the Waipahu 7 and Mento ran it in on the next play for a 7-0 lead.
‘Iolani scored on its next three drives. The Raiders took a 14-0 lead on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Foy to Tanner Nishioka, who had four catches for 93 yards.
Lee’s 22-yard field goal made it 17-0 and Mento scored on an 8-yard run with 5:37 remaining to make it 24-0 going into halftime.
Senior running back Gregorio Alip tried to carry the offense for Waipahu, running for 113 yards on 18 carries.
Two interceptions and a fumble brought an end to Waipahu drives in the second half and Mento polished off the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
"We showed them many different formations that we don’t usually use too often and wanted to get the run game going," Mento said. "This was one of our best games out of the whole season and I thought we played great as a team."
‘Iolani finished with 411 total yards to Waipahu’s 200, which were all gained on the ground.
