UH eighth out of nine WAC teams

The University of Hawaii finished eighth in the nine-member Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for the 2010-2011 school year, according to the conference website.

The competition compares member schools across a total of 19 men’s and women’s sports awarding points based upon order of conference finish.

UH, which had 58 points, earned points in 15 sports and won or shared titles in women’s volleyball, football and baseball.

Men’s volleyball wasn’t included because it is not a WAC-sponsored men’s sport.

Boise State won the cup with 95.50 points with Fresno State second at 89.50 and New Mexico State third with 82.50.

Trail Blazers’ Matthews at clinic

Wesley Matthews of the Portland Trail Blazers will be an instructor at the TRD Pro Player Island Basketball Camp, June 9-11.

The camp will be at Maryknoll School’s T.C. Ching Gymnasium.

NBA shooting coach John Townsend and Nike Basketball skills coach Larry Davis will also be there to instruct along with other coaches from high schools, colleges and grade schools in Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest.

The focus will be on fundamental techniques and is open to boys and girls of all skill levels in grades 3-12.

UH players make all-academic team

Four Hawaii water polo players were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation all-academic team, it was announced Wednesday.

The four Hawaii student-athlete honorees are sophomores Amarens Genee and Monique Wilson and seniors Dagmar Genee and Saara Majuri.

Majuri ended her career with 85 assists, third on the school’s all-time list. She scored 31 goals this past season.

Dagmar Genee finished her career with 69 assists, fourth on the school’s all-time list.

Amarens Genee scored 32 goals this past season. Wilson had 16 steals, 14 assists and five goals.

Hawaii players at Public Links

Lihue’s Kelli Oride shot 2 under par on the back nine, which propelled her to medalist honors at Saturday’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links local qualifier. Oride, a Kauai High graduate who is headed to Notre Dame in the fall, shot 2-over 74 at windy Ewa Beach Golf Club.

That was four shots better than Aiea’s Anna Jang, who just finished her sophomore year at Princeton. ‘Iolani sophomore Kaci Masuda was third, at 79.

The three will join Waiakea senior Nani Yagi and Punahou eighth-grader Allisen Corpuz, who qualified earlier, at the WAPL Championship. It will be June 27-July 2 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. Maryknoll eighth-grader Mariel Galdiano will also be there. She earned an exemption by qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open.

The U.S. Men’s Amateur Public Links also will be at Bandon Dunes’ Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald courses the same dates. Landon Johnson (69-74) and Sean Maekawa (71-72) shot 143 Saturday at Hilo Municipal to earn that sectional’s two spots. First alternate is Chris Igawa (68-76—144). TJ Kua qualified earlier.

Michelle Condry (81) and Alice Kim (82) were alternates at Ewa Beach.

Casey Watabu (2006) and Michelle Wie (2003) were the last Hawaii golfers to win national public links championships.

Finau, Fujikawa break par

Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa and Tony Finau, who represents Turtle Bay, each shot below par in Wednesday’s opening round of the River Hills Classic. The eGolf Professional Tour stop is in Lake Wylie, S.C.

Fujikawa had three birdies on the back nine to shoot 1-under-par 71 at Palisades Country Club. That leaves him 10 shots off the pace set by Brice Garnett, whose course-record 10-under 61 came at River Hills Country Club. Finau is tied for third after a 67 at Palisades.

Last week, Fujikawa finished tied for 76th at eGolf’s $250,000 Donald Ross Championship in Southern Pines, N.C. After opening with consecutive 69s to make his first cut since February, the Moanalua High graduate closed 73-76 to finish at 2-over 286. He won $1,050.

Kona Open tees off June 25

This year’s Kona Open will be June 25-26 at Kona Country Club’s Ocean Course. The entry deadline is June 10 and the first 120 entries will be accepted.

The tournament offers three flights — professional, championship (amateurs with handicap index of 6.6 or less) and A (handicap index up to 18). Special room rates are available for contestants.
