A magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck off Papua New Guinea but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said today.

They noted, however, that earthquakes of this size can generate local tsunamis along coasts within about 62 miles of the epicenter.

The quake was centered 71 miles east-southeast of Kimbe in New Britain, Papua New Guinea, in the South Pacific, at a depth of about 13.4 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It struck at about 10:03 a.m. Thursday in Papua New Guinea (2:03 p.m. Wednesday Hawaii time.)

There were no immediate reports of damage from Papua New Guinea.
