A wildfire on the Kona side of the Big Island has spread to 500 acres but is mostly contained. 

The fire is burning fountain grass inside the Puu Anahulu Game Management Area near the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area. It’s not burning any threatened or endangered species. 

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Wednesday the fire was sparked by lightning and was 59 percent contained. 

The flames were initially reported Tuesday. Dozens of firefighters from the county, state and Pohakuloa Training Area responded. Crews using bulldozers built a fire line around the perimeter to keep the blaze from spreading.

Thirty-one firefighters from the state’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife are currently battling the flames, along with five firefighters from Hawaii County, and five from Pohakuloa.
