League features past, present stars

It will be a jump ball of emotions Thursday when the Hawaii College Basketball Summer League tips off its 29th season at Manoa Recreation Center.

The summer league that features the talents of college court standouts — past, present and likely future — also will remember one of its own before the first whistle of the 6 p.m. game between Army and National Fire Protection. There will be a moment of silence for Kameron Steinhoff, who died last month from injuries suffered in a skateboarding accident.

The six-team league is also dedicating the season to the late Punahou School and Hawaii Pacific player. And Steinhoff will be permanently on the Electricians Hawaii roster, according to coach Artie Wilson.

"As long as I’m coach of Electricians Hawaii, you’ll always see Kameron on my roster," said Wilson, who played at Hawaii (1970-73). "To me, he was the ultimate warrior. He had that look that I appreciate in a player, a look that whatever you asked of him, he was going to do.

"There was no fear. The stage was never too big for him. He was always ready to give it his all. He had such a big heart."

Former HPU player Kawika Smith will honor Steinhoff by wearing jersey No. 42 — Steinhoff’s number — this year.

Wilson, a coach since the league’s inception, will see one of his former players on the opposing bench. Tim Shepherd, who played at Hawaii (1988-92), makes his coaching debut for National Fire Protection.

"I actually was coming back to play, but Pat (Tanibe) and Bryan (Barr) said they needed a coach," Shepherd said of the league organizers. "I thought there was a rule that allowed player-coaches but there isn’t.

"That’s OK. This league has given me so much, it’s time for me to give back."

Shepherd first played in the summer league as a redshirt freshman.

"It was a real eye-opener that first season," said Shepherd, the former UH basketball director of operations who currently is an assistant varsity coach at Mid-Pacific Institute. "You got real game experience, playing against college and ex-college players.

"They taught me how to be tough, how to be physical. I picked up things that I was able to apply during my career. It helped me develop as a player, which is a goal I have for the players on my team."

The league features current and former college players, and high school players at least 16 years of age. Among the more recognizable names this season are Derrick Low (‘Iolani, Washington State), Julian Sensley (Kalaheo, Hawaii), Bobby Nash (‘Iolani, Hawaii), Zane Johnson (Hawaii), Vander Joaquim (Hawaii) and Junior Ale (Kahuku, Brigham Young-Hawaii).

Rosters are limited to 12 players. This year, the league had the most players in its history (80) available for the draft. Those who went undrafted are alternates and available in case of injury or absence.
