Man suspected of assault

Police arrested a former Kapolei High School employee on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Police said the girl reported the assault happened May 2. The man was arrested for investigation of third-degree sexual assault Monday morning at 4235 Bougainville Ave. in Kapolei. He was released pending investigation.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said the man was a substitute educational assistant at the high school during the recently completed school year and resigned at the end of the session. The man also was a volunteer assistant football coach for the Hurricanes this past season, the spokeswoman said. She could not confirm whether the girl was a student at the school.

Couple’s fight ends in arrest

A 27-year-old Schofield Barracks man is in police custody for allegedly trying to push his wife out of his vehicle while driving on the H-1 freeway.

The incident began with the man arguing with his 24-year-old wife in the vehicle at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, police said. When the woman tried to get out, the man stopped her, then sped off onto the westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway near Kunia, police said. On the freeway, the man opened the vehicle’s door and tried to push the woman out, police said.

The couple returned to their Kunia home, and the woman reported the incident later in the day. Police found the man at Pearlridge Center in Aiea Monday night and arrested him for investigation of second-degree attempted murder and kidnapping.

Fire captain injured in fall

A Honolulu Fire Department captain was injured when he fell about 30 feet through the roof of a Kalihi warehouse Monday night.

Capt. Dwayne Lee, 43, was working on the roof of a building on Republican Street reported to be on fire when he stepped on a fiberglass panel and fell through the warehouse roof, landing on the floor of the structure, said HFD spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.

Lee, a 20-year veteran of the department and a captain at the Kalihi Kai Fire Station, was taken to the hospital in serious condition but later upgraded to stable condition.

Firefighters first responded to the report of smoke and possible fire on Puuhale Road at about 9:56 p.m. Firefighters found smoke in the area and began a search for the source, Seelig said. After determining that it was coming from 2023 Republican St., Lee and a group of firefighters headed for the roof while others made forcible entry from the ground.

Arriving firefighters observed a large amount of smoke coming from an oven used to burn off combustible materials from motors.

It was during their investigation that Lee fell through the roof. There was no fire damage to the building, Seelig said.

The fire was reported under control by 10:33 p.m.

This is the second firefighter injured this month, and this year. On June 3, firefighter Kamaki Worthington was nearly electrocuted while extinguishing a garage fire in Sunset Beach.

Big Isle police investigate horse deaths

Hawaii island police are investigating the deaths of two horses that were allegedly shot in the Hakalau area of East Hawaii.

Both horses were found by the caretaker of a property off Chin Chuck Road across from Veterans Park, police said.

The caretaker found a decomposing horse carcass entwined in barbed wire and with an apparent gunshot wound on June 8. The following day the man found another horse within the 10-acre property with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police Lt. Miles Chong said there have been no reports of similar incidents.

Army destroys device found on Kauai shore

Explosives disposal specialists from Schofield Barracks flew to Kauai on Tuesday morning to destroy a military pyrotechnic device found on a beach near Anahola.

It was the second time in less than a month that the Army’s 706th explosive ordnance disposal team flew in from Schofield Barracks to destroy a military device found on Kauai’s shores.

In the latest incident, an area resident found a cylindrical object on Aliomanu Beach Tuesday morning and immediately notified authorities.

Kauai police secured the area and contacted the Army. An explosives specialist from the Transportation Security Administration was also there to inspect the device.

Members of the Army’s EOD team arrived on Kauai at 9:30 a.m., moved the object to a remote location in Kapaa and destroyed it at 11:20 a.m.

The device, an MK 58 Marine Marker, is about 21 inches long and weighs about 13 pounds. The Navy uses it in air and sea rescue operations as a target marker and surface wind indicator.
