Moiliili man under investigation on extra arson charge

Police arrested a 46-year-old Moiliili man Tuesday for investigation of an additional arson charge related to several fires in Makiki last month.

Thomas J. Chong was arrested in Kaneohe on suspicion of first-degree arson. He remains at the main cell block awaiting charges.

Police said Chong set fire to five locations. One of the fires was on May 20 and endangered the residents who were at home in bed, including a 56-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman.

Chong had been previously charged with three counts of first-degree arson on May 25 after turning himself in to police two days earlier. He was released after posting $100,000 bail.

At the time, police said Chong twice set fire to a car belonging to an ex-girlfriend and tried to light fires to the doorways of two Wilder Avenue apartments while people were sleeping. Those incidents took place between May 10 and 17, police said.
