City investigates unauthorized storage site in Waipahu

The city launched an investigation of an unauthorized storage site in Waipahu with piles of materials, including those reported to be for city projects.

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle held a news briefing at the site near the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex about the stockpiled materials discovered by a longtime city employee in late September. The employee notified officials after he noticed a truck traveling to the 7- to 10-acre site.

Stockpiled and discarded items including sand, lumber, rocks, soil, asphalt concrete, gravel, metal, tires, rebar and concrete blocks were observed in the area. "We’re investigating where these materials came from and have determined that some did come from city projects," said Carlisle. There are some indications on some materials of where the items came from, but that is still being analyzed.
