Walker sky high after training with best

It’s been a busy graduation season for Joshua Walker.

Last month, it was receiving his English/creative writing degree from the University of Hawaii.

Last week, it was receiving confirmation that his volleyball career has life beyond college.

The two-time all-conference outside hitter and second-team All-American spent three weeks training at the U.S. National Team facility in Anaheim, Calif. He returned to Hawaii on Thursday and will continue to do some training before heading back to Anaheim next month for the World University Games tryouts.

"It was a lot of fun, playing with all the All-Americans, playing with guys I’ve played against the past few years," Walker said. "The national team was there for a bit. I got to meet (former UH player and two-time Olympian) Clay Stanley.

"I surprised myself. I felt that I got better in those three weeks. It was great playing against the best."

Walker said the biggest surprise was how well he served. This past season he had a team-high 29 aces … but also a team-high 89 service errors.

"I was happy with how well I was serving, how consistent I was at it," he said. "The coaches noticed.

"It (the experience) was both harder and easier than college. Harder because everyone is so good, easier because everyone knows what they’re doing. The important thing is I was in the gym with these guys. To play at this high level, it’s all about executing consistently."

Walker has signed with an agent, but has not committed to a pro team. He said his best offer has come from a German team, but "I’m not worried about the money," he said. "If I play well, the money will come. I want to play overseas and keep getting better."

The national team aspirations remain, including playing in the Olympics.

"I’m not worried about 2012 (Olympics in London)," Walker said. "But 2016 (Brazil) is a huge goal."

Several players with Hawaii ties have been in Anaheim eyeing a spot on the World University Games roster. Among them are current U.S. A2 National Team member and 2010 Stanford graduate Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani ’06), former Hawaii libero Ric Cervantes and former UH middle Matt Rawson, the latter who is recuperating from recent knee surgery. Shoji, his brother Erik (Punahou ’08), Brad Lawson (‘Iolani ’08), Cervantes and former Warrior Jake Schkud were part of the U.S. Men’s Training Team that scrimmaged during last month’s Volleyball Extravaganza at Penn State in conjunction with the NCAA men’s final four.

The World University Games are Aug. 11-23 in Shenzhen, China.
