Safeway to develop Ewa shopping center
Property Development Centers, a wholly owned subsidiary of Safeway Inc., said today it will buy a 20-acre site at the corner of Fort Weaver Road and Keaunui Drive to develop a 210,000-square-foot shopping center with Safeway as the anchor tenant.
Property Development Centers said it bought the land from Laulani Village Holdings and will develop the parcel into the Laulani Village Shopping Center.
“Ewa residents have traditionally traveled to Kapolei to do their shopping. This new center will provide retail alternatives much closer to their homes,” said David Zylstra, chief operating officer of Property Development Centers.
Safeway will occupy about 60,000 square feet of the retail space. That’s about the same size as Safeway’s Kapahulu Avenue store.
Property Development Centers said the shopping center will add 500 jobs to the area, including 150 Safeway employees.
The company said it expects to break ground this fall and open the store in late 2012.
