UH men’s basketball team falls 73-54 to No. 22 Gonzaga

The Hawaii men’s basketball team hung with No. 22 Gonzaga for 30 minutes before the Bulldogs pulled away for a 73-54 win in the BC Basketball Classic today in Vancouver, Canada.

Freshman point guard Shaquille Stokes led the Rainbow Warriors (1-1) with 17 points. Senior guard Zane Johnson added 12 points and sophomore center Davis Rozitis added nine points and nine rebounds off the bench.

UH coach Gib Arnold was assessed the first ejection of his career for arguing with officials in the final minutes. Gonzaga, of the West Coast Conference, attempted 28 free throws to UH’s eight.

All four of UH’s big men — Vander Joaquim, Rozitis, Joston Thomas and Trevor Wiseman — were in foul trouble for most of the game. Joaquim, who had 12 rebounds, and Thomas fouled out.

One of the best mid-major programs of the last decade showed its experience in the final minutes. UH committed 23 turnovers to 11 for GU.

Senior center Robert Sacre led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The ‘Bows were held without a field goal for the final 7:18 as the Bulldogs (3-0), playing in front of a friendly crowd at the Rogers Arena, extended their lead.

Stokes hit two free throws to cut it to 45-44 with 12 minutes to play. But UH would never gain the lead in the second half as the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run.

Stokes converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 52-47, then Johnson hit a 3 to make it 58-52 with 7:18 to play.

Gonzaga seized control with a 13-0 run, during which Arnold was tossed while arguing with officials.

UH trailed 33-27 at halftime. Stokes put in nine points in the opening half.
