U.S. volleyball settles for silver
Host Japan swept the U.S. national women’s volleyball team 29-27, 25-23, 25-18 Friday on the final day of the FIVB World Cup in Tokyo. Team USA has three players from Hawaii — starters Lindsey Berg and Heather Bown and backup libero Tamari Miyashiro.
Italy won the gold medal with a 10-1 record after sweeping Kenya earlier.
Maui’s Baxter wins paddle championship
Connor Baxter pulled away from fellow Mauian Kai Lenny in the final 30 yards to finish second in Friday’s final event of the Namoto World Paddle Challenge in Fiji.
Baxter’s performance gave him the overall title, breaking a tie with Lenny. Baxter was second to Lenny in Wednesday’s first race and edged Lenny in Thursday’s event.
Hawaii’s Slater Trout won Friday’s race around Namotu Island, finishing third overall on the first stop of the Stand-Up World Series tour.
Seasiders start 0-2 in men’s basketball
Jet Chang scored 21 points, but the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball team lost to Central Washington 78-77 on Friday night in Seattle, Wash.
Bracken Funk added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Seasiders (0-2). Kevin Davis led Central Washington (1-1) with 14 points.
