Police block traffic as firefighters calm down a horse on the H-1 Freeway in Pearl City this morning. The horse was in a trailer that overturned on the freeway near the Wailmalu exit.

A horse trailer overturned in the westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway this morning, injuring the horse inside.

Honolulu firefighters treated the horse for a large scrape on its right hindquarter and helped calm it down after the accident at about 11:10 a.m.

Hawaii News Now reported that the horse later died.

The horse ran onto the freeway before its handlers were able to bring it back to the shoulder lane. The horse appeared to be able to support its weight on all four legs

Police closed three lanes of the H-1 freeway just before the Waimalu off-ramp.
