The Honolulu Fire Department planned to resume a search at daylight today for a missing 51-year-old Colorado man who disappeared while surfing for the first time at Sunset Beach.

Robert Rumburg, of Arvada, Colo., was reported missing Wednesday after he failed to make a flight to Colorado. His rental car and personal effects were found in the Sunset Beach home where he was staying.

Rumburg is 6 feet 2 and was last seen wearing black shorts. The Coast Guard said he was in excellent health with no medical issues.

The Coast Guard suspended its search Friday night after searching 3,155 square miles.

Firefighters searched Thursday between Ehukai Beach Park and Sunset Beach by helicopter, boat, and personal water craft, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. Divers with the Fire Department also checked coral reefs, but found no signs of Rumburg. They suspended their search Friday night because of darkness.

Coast Guard crews also searched Thursday aboard the cutter Ahi, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, an auxiliary airplane, and an HC-130 Hercules airplane. The crews searched along the North Shore between Kahuku and Kaena Point, out to 39 miles from shore and covering 2,161 square miles.

Rumburg’s friend notified the Coast Guard that he was missing at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the Coast Guard and Fire Department began searching that night. Rumburg’s borrowed white surfboard was found later that night in the ocean.
