Chun qualifies for world tournament

Former world champion Clarissa Chun of Honolulu qualified for the 2011 World Wrestling Championships with a victory Saturday over Alyssa Lampe of Tomahawk, Wis., at the U.S. World Team Trials at Oklahoma City.

Chun, who turns 30 on Aug. 27, earned an automatic berth in this weekend’s best-of-three finals at 106 pounds by winning her fourth U.S. Open title in April.

Chun battled a shoulder injury in 2010, losing to Lampe in the finals.

The world championships, to be held in Turkey, will serve as a qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Tsai, Nakama at QB Club

Honolulu Star-Advertiser sportswriter Stephen Tsai and Wes Nakama, the assistant director of information for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, are the featured speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Tsai will analyze the Hawaii football recruiting class. Nakama will recap spring high school sports as well as the changes voted upon at the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association meeting.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden Restaurant, with the program to follow at noon. The cost is $15 per person.

Stanley leads U.S. in defeat

Honolulu’s Clay Stanley had 12 kills and a block, but it was not enough as the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team fell to top-ranked Brazil 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 in an FIVB World League pool play match Saturday in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Stanley, an opposite who played at Hawaii, was the MVP of the 2008 Olympics, leading the U.S. over Brazil for the gold medal in Beijing.

The U.S. dropped to 3-2 in Pool A and will meet Brazil (5-0) again today.

Shoji on A2 team

‘Iolani graduate Kawika Shoji is one of two setters on the U.S. Men’s A2 Volleyball Team which opens defense of its Pan American Cup crown Monday in Canada.

This is the first A2 competition for Shoji, a three-time All-American at Stanford and the 2010 AVCA National Player of the Year. The U.S., seeking its sixth Pan Am title, opens pool play with the Bahamas.
