Soldier died after physical training session
The Hawaii National Guard has identified a soldier who died on Kauai as Sgt. 1st Class Eric Y. Fujiwara, 54, of Kalaheo, Kauai.
The Guard said in a statement Thursday that the light-wheeled vehicle mechanic died while on duty at a vehicle maintenance shop in Hanapepe.
Fujiwara had just finished some physical training and was wearing his workout clothes when a fellow soldier found him unresponsive on Wednesday.
Soldiers performed CPR, and Fujiwara was taken to Kauai Memorial Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead at about 1 p.m.
The Guard said it is unclear what caused his death.
Fujiwara served with the Guard for 37 years. He deployed twice with the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team — once to Iraq and once to Kuwait.
Man found in water ID’d as 90-year-old
Kauai authorities have identified the body of a man found Nov. 4 in shallow water near the Nawiliwili Yacht Club as that of Roy Shiroma, 90, of Lihue. Foul play is not suspected, police said.
A fisherman came upon the body at about 11:05 p.m. Nov. 4 while catching opae (freshwater shrimp) near the base of a floating wooden dock used by kayak companies.
Shiroma’s body was pulled out of the water by a friend of the fisherman, who then began CPR.
Police arrived and continued CPR until paramedics arrived.
Efforts to revive Shiroma were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Wilcox Hospital.
Autopsy results are pending, police said.
