Police major’s pay cut off after his arrest
A police major accused of drug possession has been placed on unpaid leave, a police department spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Maj. Carlton Nishimura, 55, was arrested by FBI agents on Monday. The spokeswoman said the department is also conducting an internal investigation of the 31-year veteran.
During a search of Nishimura’s Waianae home on Monday, FBI agents found more than half a pound of methamphetamine in six clear plastic bags. The FBI said it also found other items in the home consistent with drug dealing.
Nishimura remains in federal custody and will appear in U.S. District Court Friday. He had been free on a $50,000 signature bond in another federal case in which he is accused of extorting money from an illegal gambling house operator, lying to the FBI and trying to persuade a witness to lie. He is scheduled to appear in court for that case also on Friday.
After his indictment in February, the department took away his police powers and placed him on desk duty. The department later placed him on paid administrative leave.
