Spearfisher dies after sea mishap

A man who ran into trouble while spearfishing in waters off Makapuu was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition Saturday and later died, officials said.

The man, 62, was pulled ashore about 1 p.m. near the bathrooms at the beach called Baby Makapuu, across the street from Sea Life Park, officials from the Department of Emergency Services said.

Lifeguards performed CPR before paramedics transported him to the hospital, where he died.

Man cut with knife in fight at church

A man was cut on the arm during a fight Saturday at Mililani Presbyterian Church.

A caller reported two men fighting at the church at 95-410 Kuahelani Ave. at 2:44 p.m., police said.

One man attacked the other man with a knife, using a slashing-type motion, initial dispatch reports said.

The 27-year-old man tried to block the attack with his left arm and suffered a deep gash, about an inch-and-a-half long, to his outer wrist, the reports said.

Paramedics took the man to the Queen’s Medical Center.

Police said officers detained a man in connection with the stabbing.

Suspect held in parking lot incidents

A Halawa man who allegedly was casing vehicles in an Ala Moana area parking lot Friday afternoon got into a lot more trouble after he almost ran over two people.

Police said the man, 20, was confronted by another man, 42, in the parking lot at about 1 p.m. The younger man reversed the vehicle he was in toward the other man, nearly hitting him, police said. The suspect fled the area but returned a short time later, and then made a wide turn, nearly hitting a woman, 36, as she was calling police to report the incident, police said.

As he was being arrested, police found an air gun, police said.

The suspect was arrested and held pending charges of two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and one count of prohibited use of an air gun.

Plaintiffs want case to proceed

Lawyers for a former Maui County Councilman have filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit that sought to force him out of office, noting that his term ended almost six months ago, the Maui News reports.

Plaintiffs in the suit said that doing so would reward what they described as Sol Kaho‘ohalahala’s delay tactics, and that a verdict was needed to help guide public officials in future disputes over council member residency. Plaintiffs also noted that their suit asked for Kaho‘ohalahala to pay back salary and reimbursements he received from the county while serving as a council member, which they valued at more than $200,000.

A hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday before Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza, who has not ruled on the 2008 suit.
