Senior guard Zane Johnson scored a game-high 24 points as Hawaii broke open a close game early in the second half to beat Cal State Northridge 86-67 in its season-opening basketball game.
Freshman swingman Stephon Hicks led the Matadors (0-2) with 22 points.
With an 11 p.m. tip-off, it was played Monday night and Tuesday morning at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of a crowd of around 3,000 and a national television audience, part of ESPN’s College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.
Sophomore forward Trevor Wiseman added career highs in points (19) and rebounds (16 ). Freshman guard Shaquille Stokes scored 14 after zero in the first half. Junior center Vander Joaquim scored 12 points and added eight rebounds.
Hawaii led 37-34 at halftime, with Johnson scoring 15 points and Wiseman 10.

The Rainbow Warriors never trailed after the break, taking command with an 11-2 run to start the second half. Stokes fueled the run with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Johnson contributed one of his six treys.
