» An off-duty federal agent in Hawaii for the APEC summit was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting Nov. 5 of Kailua resident Kollin Elderts, 23, at a Waikiki McDonald’s restaurant. Suspect Christopher Deedy, 27, a special agent with the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, was released Monday after posting bail.
» President Barack Obama’s arrival Friday night kicked the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings into high gear, while Oahu residents endured roadblocks and ever-tightening security measures during the weeklong meetings. Obama was seeking to forge a new trade agreement with other Pacific Rim nations.
» All five people aboard a Blue Hawaiian Helicopters aircraft, including a Pennsylvania couple on their honeymoon, were killed Thursday when the Maui-based tour helicopter crashed in east Molokai.
» The state and United Public Workers, which represents about 9,000 blue-collar government workers, announced a tentative contract agreement Thursday that includes unpaid days off, higher employee health premiums and a no-layoff guarantee for two years. Meanwhile, Hawaiian Telcom unionized employees launched a two-day strike Thursday to protest the company’s contract offer; the firm said no disruptions in service were expected.
» Kamehameha Schools selected Earl T. Kim, an ‘Iolani School graduate and superintendent of the Montgomery, N.J., as new head of school for the flagship Kapalama campus. In July 2012 he will succeed Michael J. Chun, who is retiring after serving as headmaster since 1988.

» Michael Jackson’s doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter in the pop star’s death for supplying Jackson with a powerful operating-room anesthetic to help him sleep as he rehearsed for his big comeback. Dr. Conrad Murray will be sentenced Nov. 29.
» College football icon Joe Paterno was ousted Wednesday night by Penn State’s board of trustees, fired because he didn’t do enough to stop a child sex-abuse scandal centered around former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The scandal also led to the ouster of Penn State’s president.
» Republican Herman Cain continued his campaign for the White House, fending off allegations that he sexually harassed four women more than a decade ago. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, meanwhile, crept near the front of the GOP pack as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney retook first place.

» The U.N. atomic agency said for the first time Tuesday that Iran is suspected of conducting secret experiments whose sole purpose is the development of nuclear arms, an assessment that draws on 1,000 pages of intelligence and years of research.
