Police closed McCully Street where it intersects with Ala Wai Boulevard and Kalakaua Avenue for about a half-hour Saturday afternoon before determining that a blue suitcase and green sleeping bag left at a bus stop in the area were harmless.

Police said they closed the streets about 2:30 p.m. after discovering the "suspicious" items across Ena Road from the 7-Eleven store at the corner of Ena and Kalakaua.

An FBI agent attached a line to the sleeping bag and separated it from the suitcase. The agent, wearing body armor, opened the luggage and emptied the contents, which turned out to be harmless. The contents included plastic shopping bags, a pair of tennis shoes and a blanket.

Law enforcement officers said the items were checked for radiation, X-rayed and inspected.

"Being that it’s APEC week and usually homeless people don’t just leave their stuff, that’s why we have what we have now," said police Sgt. Aaron Agmata.
